Gaussguns

Gaussguns are also known as “Coilers” and are a medium-high TQ weapon with many types of low-TQ ammunition. They deplete their power reserves very quickly and carrying additional power packs is requisite for prolonged engagements.

Sniper Rifles are often modified coilguns that concentrate on delivering a projectile on a fast, very flat trajectory over very long distances. These are much lighter than the heavy-weapons type of railgun however they are slow firing and have a very long recharge time. They are typified by having such long ‘barrels’ that they often have to be shoulder mounted with the coil pellet starting its path from behind the shoulder of the firer.

Unlike railguns the more advanced coilgun does not have a rail along its length, instead the munitions is run inside a tube that resides within the coils – the munition is actually “pulled” along the tube by switching the magnetic field in sequence along the length of the barrel/tube.

There is far less heat generated within the weapon itself by the passage of the munitions than on railguns due to the use of so-called frictionless materials and fine tuning of the magnetic fields that actually mean that the munitions is floating within the tube, not resting upon it.

Old developmentally problems such as the discharge of remaining energy in the remaining magnetic fields have long since been overcome, with most of that energy now being returned and stored in capacitors and anything beyond that in heat sinks.

Similarly acceleration issues relating to projectile saturation have been overcome by the use of advanced materials and miniaturisation of the coils allowing for more to be packed into a shorter barrel, thereby increasing the number of “stations” at which force can be applied to the projectile.

Advanced coilguns use progressively more energy efficient materials (e.g. room temperature superconducting magnets) that radically reduce wasted energy and in fact the most advanced types could be considered as somewhat different weapons as they propel the munitions much like a surfboard on a wave rather than pulling them along – this theoretical use was first termed as a “quenchgun” sometime back in the 21st Century.

A coilgun round will typically reach hypersonic speeds of around 2000m/s or faster, which although not as fast as railguns, is usually more than sufficient for human battlefield situations.

Higher velocities tend to also require the use of more specialised munitions due to ablative issue with the projectile travelling at such high velocities, heat from friction being the most obvious.

T-DF Variants:
The T-DF (and occasionally the T-PEA) use a higher-TQ variant of the gauss rifle which differs mostly in that it carries its ammunition as a solid block (we assume that this is a block of of nanites). These transform to the required ammunition type ‘on-demand’ with Augmentation-Synch from the Trooper’s mind: The trooper glyphs “HE” and the block produces a HE round that is delivered to the coil-carriage. Similarly the Trooper may request, by Glyphing the round-type, Sabot AP, standard AP, delayed-fuse shrapnel and many other types.

The main drawback is a lower rate of fire as the nano-block requires some time for “manufacturing” of the round and also rapid utilisation of the nanite-block itself. Indeed the process is not particularly useful for prolonged engagements and is never used on the carbine versions that typify use in FIBUA or FIEAA – the rapid expenditure of ammunition being far more suited to simple kinetic rounds. The longer-range rifle though, given longer-range engagement can be exceptionally useful for the pseudo-sniper engagement, taking the time to chose the most applicable round for the current target such as an enemy hiding to the left and right of a window or doorway – where a delayed-time HE round can produce a double kill with a single shot.

As with many of the weapons used by the T-PEA there is an element of them using high-tech weapons regardless of their “Best-fit” and simply to “show-off” their advanced weaponry capabilities. This approach, however, is not thought to be employed by the T-DF although their actual capabilities have long been shrouded in mystery and little is really known about their weaponry and its uses. Indeed all of the above is supposition as all T-DF weaponry is classified and regarded as UTQ and therefore out of reach of any Habitat other than Agency ones.
